It’s well-known that fake news funnyman Stephen Colbert is a massive Tolkien fan, evidenced by that time when he schooled self-proclaimed #1 Tolkien fan James Franco on the Colbert Report. Or that other time where he schooled self-proclaimed #1 Tolkien fan James Franco on the Colbert Report… again.
Needless to say, Colbert’s Middle-earth mania earned him notice from Peter Jackson, who invited the whole Colbert clan down to New Zealand to cameo in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

Through mists, mountains, Masters and muttering, we see a bit more of Middle Earth and the characters in it fleshed out. It’s well-known that the franchise is delving far deeper into this period of history than the book did – way deeper. It’s a simple equation, really: more history = more movies = more money. Lake Town’s Bard makes his first appearance in this instalment, as does Evangeline Lily’s mysterious Tauriel. We even see a split-second shot of a lumbering Beorn. So despite some personal problems I have with the first movie, I’m still holding out hope to be captivated by a kind of magic that doesn’t come out of a wizard’s staff.
Ai! Ai! Hobbit-watchers, this first glorious (or mysteriously foggy if you are where I am) day of October sees the release of the full HD trailer for the next instalment of The Hobbit franchise.
Personally, I’m stoked to finally see more of Middle Earth: Mirkwood, Erebor, the Woodland Realm and even Dol Guldur, which was just a whisper in Tolkien lore until now. Have a watch and let me know what you think in the comments below:
