No Will Smith for Independence Day 2

Sorry, Captain Heller fans – Will Smith has confirmed he won’t be reprising his balls-to-the-wall pilot role in the Independence Day sequel, currently titled ID Forever Part I. Presumably, this means there will also be an ID Forever Part II.

According to Variety, Smith has turned down the offer. I don’t know if I can blame him, to be honest – ID came out in 1996, and he hasn’t exactly had trouble finding work since. According to the sequel’s IMDb page, writer Dean Devlin was paid to write a sequel right after the original but gave the money back as he felt the story wasn’t good enough. RESPECT.

Devlin and director Roland Emmerich are once again teaming up for this bad boy in what’s sure to be a look at the state of the world post alien contact. This writer is pretty leery about another chapter two decades after the original (these things never tend to go well), but there’s certainly a chance it could really hit the nail on the head.

ID Forever Part I is set to hit theatres in July 2016. Providing hostile aliens don’t get here first.
