Heading to improv class! Have a great Friday night folks!

Guy came over on Wednesday and helped me fix up my online dating profile! He had a lot of pointers on how to make a good profile that’s easy to read, and says a lot about myself in as few words as possible. Guy is kind of the King of Online Dating…so he helped me record a vlog about it! I’m still in the midst of editing it, but it’ll be up soon. :)

So far I’ve just gotten a couple “ratings” (a feature I don’t really care for) and I’ve been “poked”…but no messages yet. I haven’t browsed my matches yet either. I’m still getting accustomed to it. Even though I’ve had a blog for awhile, and I make videos…it still weirds me out a little putting myself out there online in this capacity. But I’m sure I’ll get used to it! I kept my profile pretty sparse, and didn’t use my real name – so I feel pretty safe, and proud of my little dating corner of the internet. Hopefully there’ll be some juicy drama soon!

I’m tired of peeking at online dating and wondering what it might lead to without actually doing anything about it. Maybe it’ll be a giant waste of time – but what if it isn’t?

The Internet’s a big place…there has to be SOMEONE that fits my tastes out there!

So tomorrow after comics, Guy is coming over to give me a hand on setting up. What site do I choose? What should I put in my profile? I won’t go so far as to say the Sideki is an expert on online DATING…but dude knows his computer stuff.

So after a few clicks, a little registration…I’ll be good to go!

Internet hunks, here I come!

MOVIE TIIIIIME!

More to the point, WHEDON TIME! No, it’s not the Avengers (though I wouldn’t say no to seeing it again OBVIOUSLY) – I’m talking about Cabin in the Woods!

I’m not a huge horror movie fan, but I’ve heard some excellent things about this one. Plus, I have to trust Mr. Whedon – if he handed me a hammer and told me to nail myself to a wall, I would do it with a smile on my face!

But the most INTERESTING part of things is who I’m going with – Serra! I haven’t seen her in AGES and it’s gonna be really awesome to catch up again. Plus, she’s bringing some friends along and I’m always down for meeting new people.

I just feel like I’ve been in a bit of a rut lately, dealing with this and that…it should be good to get out with some new friends and let loose a bit, right?

I admit, I was a little jealous of Guy and my mother having Internet lessons together (that SOUNDS dirty, but it really, really isn’t). Especially since I was the first one to offer  up the suggestion that I do the teaching  to my mother! But it sounds like they’ve been having a lot of fun and…well, I kind of want in.

So I just caved and phoned my mother to ask if I could get in on the next one.

No. Joy.

Basically, my mother said she’d rather I DIDN’T come because I might make her feel embarrassed and inhibited about online dating! AND she’s worried that Guy and I will “gang-up” on her and poke fun at how new she is to the Internet!!

WHAT?? That’s not true! I just want to have some fun with my mother and my best friend, that’s it!!

Plus, the absolutely WORST thing about this is that my mother feels like she can’t be herself around me.

That hurts.

ANOTHER GUY!

Excuse me while I bust out my fan and Southern accent: “But I ain’t NEVER seen somethin’ so shocking in all mah days!”

Seriously, my mother’s really putting herself out there! For someone who was just introduced to the Internet a couple of weeks ago…impressive!

And it makes me think…if MY MOTHER can rock online dating, maybe I can too?

No complaints here, it’s fine. Really – although I can’t help but think about my mother right now as she was so DILIGENT in letting me know that she has a date tonight with Username.

A’right, a’right, that’s not his real name. I can’t remember it so I’ve made up a [possibly better?] substitute. My mother met him through a dating site and that whole deal, so it seems fitting.

I’ve always been skeptical about trawling the web for potential hook-ups and life mates. Sure, there’s always a real person behind the avatar, but can you really KNOW who you’re talking to if you can’t interact with them in person?

Still, though…the Internet’s huge nowadays (you don’t need to tell ME that) and millions of people probably use it for dating…so there must be something substantial to it.

And one of them is my mother. I NEVER thought I’d be saying that…

Anyways, back to my book – I’ve been going steady with this one for a while..he’s a real charmer. ;)

My attempt was to combine Classic, New Avengers, and my favourite picks.  I did my best to bring variety of fighting styles (hand-to-hand, psychic, magic, power cosmic, tech), mixed with the most contrasting personality make-up.

I also realized while doing this that this is my equivalent to creating a fantasy football team.  AWESOME.

It all started after improv. My mother’’s been big on the online dating scene lately –- so much so in fact, that she’s nailed down a date with a guy.

Good for her! All the best! But……what about the reason she got into the “Internet business” in the first place? Connecting with some FRIENDS?

Did that just fall by the wayside, or……? I know Guy set up an online BSG group for fans over 40 whom she could connect with – …what about them?

Here’s where it gets……frustrating. In my mother’s words:

““There’’s not enough happening, no takers at ALL actually. And besides, I’’m not interested in meeting a bunch of nerds, Valerie.””

WHAT?? WHY NOT?? THOSE ARE MY PEOPLE YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT!!

Seriously, nerds can be the heartiest, nicest, FRIENDLIEST people you could possibly hope to meet! And my mother’s just writing them off without a second glance?

NOT COOL, MOTHER.
