It’s well-known that fake news funnyman Stephen Colbert is a massive Tolkien fan, evidenced by that time when he schooled self-proclaimed #1 Tolkien fan James Franco on the Colbert Report. Or that other time where he schooled self-proclaimed #1 Tolkien fan James Franco on the Colbert Report… again.
Needless to say, Colbert’s Middle-earth mania earned him notice from Peter Jackson, who invited the whole Colbert clan down to New Zealand to cameo in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

So just where were the Colberts to be seen? Were they Orcs with grotesque CGI faces? That would seem a little unfair for cameo spotters to spy. Were they Elves in Thranduil’s Woodland Realm? Nope. But if you guessed a scene in Lake Town – you’d be right.
