The Dark Knight Rises, a review-less review

Go see Batman as soon as you possibly can or something will be stolen from you.

As you may have heard a little film called The Dark Knight Rises premiered last night and Guy and I went to said premiere to witness “the epic conclusion” of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. What can I say without spoiling the film for you? It’s so hard to even offer an opinion 12 hours after the trailer less credits rolled last night without tainting your experience with the film.

So I won’t.

But believe me, I woke up this morning wanting nothing more than to talk about it with you, but I can’t.  Not today. We all deserve the opportunity to see this film untainted. There will be a time to talk about it, I give you a week, at best.

Please, see this film before anyone tells you anything about it, so that you can feel the way I do – it is a complex mix of emotions that cover a lot of ground and after waiting 3 years for this film, we should all get the chance to feel them. But you better hurry.

All I can say without ruining something for you, was that both Guy and I rode home in a taxi after the screening in complete silence.

That alone should say something.

  1. Thanks Valerie for not giving any spoilers or information on the movie. I hope the silence on the way home is not a bad sign of something that I will experience when I do get to see the film. Can you please tell me if it was good and if the Man of Steel trailer premiered before the movie. That is all. Take care.

    • Yes and Yes! The movie is good, and long! So make sure you go to the bathroom before it starts. But I really enjoyed it, and I thought I had guessed the end…but I didn’t! It totally surprised me, and wrapped up beautifully. I even cried!

And there was a teaser trailer for the Man of Steel…awesome!

      • Hey Val,
I am so sorry it took me this long to reply. I just saw your post today. I am glad DKR was really good. Thanks for the tip about the bathroom and the tidbits about the surprising ending. I hope to see it next weekend. I have been so consumed with the Olympics that I put it on hold. I give nerds a bad name. Lol. I will get on it I promise. Then we can discuss.

          • Yeah! I’m very interested in seeing Zack Snyder’s take on the character!

        • No worries! Let me know when you see it. I really enjoyed it, but there are definitely some parts that I think could have been better. I’m looking forward to discussing!

  2. I also want to see Zack Snyder’s take. I am being optimistic. It has to be better than Bryan Singer’s take in 2006. It was good, but lacked the action and toughness that Superman should possess.

Ok so I finally, saw DKR Saturday night. I enjoyed the film, but it dragged a little in some parts. TDK was better and Heath Ledger as the Joker was brilliant. I enjoyed the police chasing Batman and letting Bane getaway after Bane terrorized the NYSE. Also Anne Hathaway as Catwoman was really good. I was surprised how much I liked her performance. I wish she had the pointy ears but oh well. Good enough. Seeing catwoman on the batcycle was cool and sexy. And the fact that she teamed up with Batman to save the city at the end was a surprise. They are enemies, but Nolan’s take was interesting. He made them work together as a team. Bane was cool, but his voice was too robotic and annoying. He was tough and evil, which is a much better interpretation than in Batman and Robin.

Now getting to the best part of the movie, which is the twist ending. The fact that Miranda, Bruce’s love interest and business partner turned out to be Talia Al’gul was unexpected. The part where she stabs Batman and gives him the speech of how she waited for this moment was great. And the other surprise was Officer Blake finding the Batcave and implying that he would be Robin or maybe the next Batman. Hmm.

Look forward to your reply. Take care Val.

    • Yes! I’m so glad you saw it!

Yeah, it’s funny, when I first saw it I left the theatre breathless and amazed. But then the more I thought about it, the more I realized that there were plot holes and that it was TOO long. At first I didn’t mind Bane’s voice because I found it weird and scary – but it doesn’t make sense. Why does he talk like that? Shouldn’t he have an accent from the country he’s from – he talked like the Monopoly man or something! Also, it was a little unrealistic how quickly Batman’s back healed, and then he was totally fine! Although the part where he climbed out of the pit was pretty cool. I also really liked Catwoman, way more than I thought I would. And I liked that she had that duality of being both good/evil. But I still don’t understand why you’d ever want to fight crime in heels, no matter how sexy they are!

I was really happy with the surprise end, although did Alfred know that Batman had survived? Did he arrange to meet Batman at the cafe? I couldn’t tell. If not, how did Bruce know which cafe to go to and which table to sit at? It was a little too convenient. But I LOVED Blake’s character, he was a great addition, and I want to see a Nightwing movie!

      Nice talking to you!

      • Hey Val,

Sorry for getting back to you so late. I agree, why couldn’t they make Bane sound normal and more easy to understand. Excellent point. Supposedly there was a bone sticking out of Bruce Wayne’s back and he heals buy being propped up by two sheets. Yeah right. Lol. That is months of recovery and possible back surgery. I think the reason Catwoman chooses to fight in heels is to use them as a weapon if she is in a tough spot. That is my guess. Lol.

Another excellent point you made about Alfred and Bruce seeing each other in the cafe. Maybe Bruce remembered the story Alfred told him about his favorite cafe and he went there and Alfred just happened to be there by coincidence. But who knows. Like you said too convenient because they just happened to be there at the same time. Blake was cool. He would make a good Nightwing. Well I hope you are having a great weekend. We are having a rainy weekend here in Miami, Florida due to Tropical Storm Isacc. Take care.
