An interesting argument…

Yesterday I mentioned that Guy had an interesting point of view about the original Green Lantern (Alan Scott) being gay in DC Rebirth. I still think: “Why not? A positive gay role model like Green Lantern is great!”

But Guy makes an interesting argument in this vlog…

Instead of just making old characters gay…why not focus on making brand new heroes gay? AND I’d also like to add…how about making a gay female character too? Just sayin’.

Anyways, food for thought!

  1. Well, there’s a right way to retro-sexualize a character, and a wrong one. In the case of Alan Scott, it was the wrong one.

The problem is that Scott was already a prominent character, with an established history and an interesting family. Rejecting that continuity with The New 52 isn’t really a wise move on the part of DC creative.

Batwoman, OTOH, was handled better, mainly because she was an obscure character in the original continuity and hadn’t been developed enough.

The thing is, if you wanted to “retro-sexualize” a popular character, the best bet would have been to pick one whose sexuality has never really been explored. Impulse / Kid Flash, for example. Maybe Ryan Choi, the new Atom.
